CAMDEN — Msgr. Michael Doyle, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish here gave the blessing April 25 at the groundbreaking for a 99-seat theater for the South Camden Theatre Company.

The new three-story theatre is expected to open in fall 2009.

The South Jersey Theatre Company was founded three years ago by playwright Joe Paprzycki of Gloucester City, and the group’s future home will be at the site where his grandfather used to own a bar at Fourth and Jasper streets. The abandoned building was demolished in the summer to make room for the theatre.

The group’s current production is John Henry Redwood’s “The Old Settler,” the story of two middle-aged sisters who share an apartment in Harlem in 1943. The play “is about the strength and courage of the black woman,” Redwood said in an interview when his play was produced for PBS television in 2001.

Performances are May 9-11 and 16-18. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and the Sunday afternoon matinee is at 1:30 p.m. For reservations call 856-456-2850.
