Jim McNamee, an employee in the maintenance department at Gloucester Catholic High School since 1980, was presented with an honorary diploma by the school during the school’s 83rd commencement ceremony, held on May 31.
“Big Jim,” as he is known to everyone at Gloucester Catholic, was a decorated Army veteran who served in World War II. He was sent to Normandy to storm the beaches with his fellow soldiers, was wounded, and returned to the front lines with his brother Robert to continue taking part in one of the war’s most important battles.
One of 18 children, Big Jim was honorably discharged from the Army. He and wife Betty, married for 65 years, have three children.
Big Jim worked in his family business, McNamee Roofing, before coming to Gloucester Catholic in 1980.
Gloucester Catholic conferred 170 diplomas on Thursday, May 31 to members of the Class of 2012.
